30 Before 30 – Weekend Accomplishments

I tackled a couple of items off my 30 before 30 list this weekend (+ Friday!).

Friday morning started off early with a pre-work blood donation (#2 of 5) at the Court near work.  Given that it was 90 degrees that day, it might not have been the best idea but I survived. 3 more donations to complete by November of 2013. I can definitely do that!

(I somehow manage to get gauze that coordinates with my outfit. – Last time = purple)

Saturday morning, we were up bright and early for a tour of the Bronx Zoo. J just became a board member for the MSU Alumni Club of Greater NY and they put together a little event at the Zoo. We had never been to the Zoo before but it was a blast!

I also got a chance to (kinda) see the infamous Bronx Zoo’s Cobra who I obsessively followed on Twitter after his “escape” last year.

After we were completely exhausted, we decided to walk a little further over to Arthur Avenue, the “Little Italy” of the Bronx to fulfill part of my “Eat in all 5 NYC Boroughs”. 3 down, 2 more to go! Still have to check out Queens and Brooklyn. Any suggestions on places to eat?

First stop, we treated ourselves to some of the best iced cappuccinos EVER at De Lillo Pastry Shop.

Next stop found us at Vincent’s Meat Market where we bought some of the most amazing (and fairly inexpensive!) sausages and sopressata. We ended up buying a small styrofoam cooler to keep it all cold while we had dinner.

I’m dying to buy some fresh pasta next time! Especially when it’s 1/4 of the price as the stuff from Eataly.

Last stop was dinner at Mario’s where I was apparently too busy eating to take a picture… Mario’s is a family owned restaurant that’s been around since 1919. I can see why because the food was amazing!

This area was seriously a hidden gem and I will most definitely be back! The only downside was the neighborhood’s proximity (or rather, not so much) to the subway. It’s a bit of a walk through the Bronx to/from the area. We ate dinner slightly early and had no problem walking back to the subway around 6:30. Would I walk around that area in the dark? Probably not…

I didn’t fully complete any 30 before 30 items this weekend but I did chip away at a couple!

Skydiving!

Well, we lived to see another day! And another item gets check off the 30 before 30 list 🙂

As I hinted in my last post, we had exciting plans for Saturday – skydiving at Sky’s the Limit in East Stroudsburg, PA (*highly* recommend this place!!) J had mentioned wanting to skydive for quite some time. A former co-worker of mine works at Sky’s the Limit on the weekends. So I told J I was game for jumping, only if we went to his place. Which is where we found ourselves yesterday (it was my Valentine’s Day gift to J).

We had insanely perfect weather! It was absolutely gorgeous out. We both got home with a little sun burn even!

I leave you with these:

Getting ready

Our plane

Nervous wave

J in free fall (my view from the plane – holy sh*t!)

J loved it.

Yep, that would be my initial reaction. Attractive, no?

Finally enjoying the freefall!

Check out that view!

It was truly an unreal experience! I don’t think I can put into words what it was like. If you’ve ever considered skydiving, do it!

Weekend Plans

My favorite part of Friday is looking forward to everything planned for the weekend! Summers are especially busy and we’ve gotten into the habit of putting everything on our kitchen wall calendar so we know when we have plans and when we’re free.

This weekend is especially exciting and involves completing an item of my 30 before 30 list.

Want some hints?

Any idea what we’ll be doing this weekend?? 😉

30 Before 30 – #9 Done

As I blogged earlier this week, Sunday September 25, 2011 was our one year wedding anniversary. Accordingly to “wedding traditions,” the traditional first year gift is paper and the modern first year gift is clocks. So, anyone following these gift customs has a choice between something paper themed or something clocked themed. J and I both took the paper route. And I was a little selfish and also completed item #9 on my 30 Before 30 list at the same time 🙂

#9 – Attend Yankees vs. Red Sox game at Yankee Stadium

As luck would have it, the final Red Sox/Yankees series of the season was September 23, 24 and 25 at Yankee Stadium. If that’s not perfect, I don’t know what is!I tried getting tickets back in April or May, whenever single game tickets went on sale. And of course that was a bust. So I started stalking StubHub. I’ve bought tickets through eBay before but didn’t have any experience with StubHub. What I loved though was that you could you could set up alerts for certain games, ticket prices and seating. Whenever tickets matching your “criteria” were available, they’d email you. So I began stalking tickets that were in decent sections (without decent prices of course!). I didn’t want to pay a TON over face value so I waited and waited. Towards the end of July, I got lucky (again) and found the perfect tickets! I didn’t want to be with the Bleacher Creatures since that’s hardly an ideal place to be if you’re rooting for any of the Yankees rivals. Especially the Red Sox. I was able to find tickets in the main section near 3rd base. Sold! Literally and figuratively 😉 The hardest part? Keeping it a secret for nearly two months! I am SUCH a bad secret keeper. But I did it. And J was beyond surprised! He had no clue.

Despite the 9-1 ass kicking the Sox got that game, we had a blast!

(it looks like we were much higher than we were?)

Me and J – all decked out in Red Sox gear, obviously 🙂

My other boyfriend – Jacoby Ellsbury *sigh*

My Red Sox adrenaline was in high gear – I almost convinced J to buy tickets to Sunday night’s game. Good thing we didn’t because it went til the 14th inning (and they won!). I would’ve been one tired cookie on Monday! Despite losing miserably, it was so much fun! This might have to become a regular thing when the Sox are in town 🙂

Now I have until September 25, 2012 to come up with a good 2nd anniversary “cotton” or “china” gift. I better start brainstorming!

Ten on Tuesday – on Wednesday?

I was bummed, thinking I had missed this week’s “Ten on Tuesday”.  But after going to Chelsea’s blog “Roots and Rings” I saw that there were no questions from this week! So I didn’t miss them after all 🙂

I’m excited to tackle a couple items on my “30 Before 30” list in the next couple of months… Items 9, 13, 15, 22 and 29 are all possibilities… 😉

Stay tuned!

30 Before 30 – #25 (Blood Donation #1 of 5)

On a complete whim yesterday, I donated blood. After leaving Court. (Come on, doesn’t every attorney donate blood when they’re in Court?!)

Every time I’ve donated in the past has been through the American Red Cross. Today was my first NY Blood Center experience. And they pulled out all the stops! There were no plain beige bandaids here. Oh no, I left with my arm all nicely wrapped in purple gauze. You heard that right – purple! Conveniently, I just happened to be wearing a purple shirt too.

See?

Pretty bad ass, if I do say so myself. Nothing like purple ruffles accented by a little purple gauze! Also, take note of my lovely bookshelf in the background. Taking pictures in the office = totally normal.

Not only did I do a good deed, I started in on #25 on my “30 Before 30” list – just have 4 more donations to go to compete it!

30 Before 30 – #16 Done

I had a ScoutMob deal for Southern Hospitality BBQ that was expiring soon (50% off check, maximum discount of $25). Southern Hospitality is a NYC restaurant co-owned by Justin Timberlake and I had been wanting to go. Adding it to my 30 Before 30 list guaranteed that I would!

Now it’s crossed off the list! There were some pluses and minuses to the visit…

I called the day before to make reservations. They only take them for parties of 6 or more but the hostess or whoever I spoke with said we wouldn’t have a problem being seated around 4:30/5 pm which is when I said we’d be coming by. Only problem? She apparently forgot about the Kentucky Derby party the restaurant was promoting. Same with whoever uses their Twitter account. I was tweeting on Saturday before we went and the bartender was responding. Told me they had the Red Sox game playing in the bar but it was on rain delay. Interesting cause when we got there, every TV had the Derby on. Nevermind it would’ve been nice for whoever was on Twitter to mention how crazy busy they were! So that was a bit annoying. Then we got there and the hostess couldn’t give us any estimate of how long we’d have to wait for a table. No estimate at all. Annoying again. But luckily the rain had been holding off so we opted to sit outside. Just in time too since all the tables filled out not long after we were seated. Service wasn’t anything fantastic. Thankfully the food was good. Not Dinosaur BBQ good though. I’ll let the pictures speak a little…

I love ribs but only the fall of the bone type without fatty areas. So I usually opt for the pulled pork, as I did here. All of the entree platters come with 2 sides. I went with sweet potato fries (mmm!) and the corn bread with honey whipped butter. I could eat corn bread all day. Half of that plate is today’s lunch 🙂

J went with the Wet & Dry rib combo platter. Southern Hospitality has Memphis style BBQ which means their ribs are dry rubbed. J is all about his BBQ sauce though so the “Wet” portion included their baby back ribs. He went with creamed corn and tater tots for his sides. And, I quote, “those were the best tater tots I’ve ever had”! He ended up not eating the creamed corn but I had a bite. Literally only one. It was super buttery! No thanks.

Overall, it was a decent time. I can cross it off, say it’s been done. Maybe we’ll go back, who knows!
